My experience as volunteer caretaker was a most unique trail experience. I could use my trail wisdom to guide stray dayhikers and warn others to stay off the fragile alpine turf, as well as tend after the lean-to and the associated campsites. The week started off with a classic visit by the Wimp Hikers. Larry, Reza, and Gene had driven up from Boston to help carry the stove out. We spent a great night playing cards at just under 4000 feet. Sad to see them go but knew I would see them in less than a month. Meanwhile, the crowd was catching up to me slowly, steadily. S.A.W. and the Bums passed shortly, as well as a bevy of others who benefited from the free soda/beer offer I had going. Kept burning some calories with short hikes and a massive weight lifting (a new stove) to help out Phil. Put together, it looked to be a winner. I took in one last visit to town before flinging myself back into the slipstream. Previous | Day-by-Day | Photos | Next Home (A.T.
